October is Tyre Safety Month, an important time to focus on your vehicle’s unsung heroes—your tyres! They are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, making it essential to keep them in top condition for safety and performance.
This year, TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety charity, encourages drivers to embrace the A.C.T. approach to tyre safety. Here’s what that means for you and your vehicle:
A – Air Pressure
Maintaining proper tyre pressure is crucial for safety. It ensures optimal handling, braking, and fuel efficiency. Underinflated tyres are at a higher risk of blowouts, wear unevenly, and consume more fuel. You can find the recommended tyre pressure on a sticker inside your driver’s door jamb, the fuel filler cap, or your owner’s manual. Additionally, most petrol stations provide air pumps, so check and top up your tyre pressure regularly!
C – Condition
Inspect your tyres thoroughly at least once a month, especially before taking long journeys, as safety is especially critical during these times. Check for any cuts, bulges, or lumps in the tread, and remove any stones or debris that may be stuck. T – Tread Depth
Your tyre tread is essential for providing grip during acceleration, braking, and cornering. In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. Here’s a handy tip: insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If you can see the coin’s outer band, your tyres are likely illegal and unsafe, which means it’s time for replacements!
